Before coming to the Judge Rotenberg Center, a few of my biggest problems were being ashamed of having trouble with my schoolwork, and the fear of having all the people I love leave me for no reason. I would often fall asleep in the classroom before a big test. I never attempted to do any homework or keep up with my class work. I was loud and disruptive during class time and would ruin the lesson for the other students in the room. I used to walk out of class if I felt it was too boring. I was even kicked out of school only a few weeks into the start of the year. I missed a lot of school trying to find a program that would better meet my needs. The Judge Rotenberg Center has helped me with my education by encouraging me to work on my weaker points and help me get stronger in subjects like math. They have motivated me by setting up academic contracts (i.e. if I do my math that day I can earn a coffee). Also, I have learned that it is not cool to be rude to others. I now know that I will have to do my school work in the long run or I will have trouble getting a job in the future, passing my G.E.D. and other tests that will come up in the near future. I have also learned that when I really try I can do anything I set my mind to. If I really wanted to do it I could have been back home within six months, but I took the hard way and here I am writing a hard but possible report. A few of the changes the Judge Rotenberg Center has helped me with are significant weight loss, improvement in my school work, exhibiting less behaviors and becoming better at accepting the few that I do have. A goal I have is to take my G.E.D. and pass it. That is all I ask from any school I go to in the near future. - Carino Van Orden |
