Teacher-Trainee

We offer a company-paid career path leading to a Massachusetts teaching certification. This path is open to qualified persons who start work with us as Mental Health Assistants and who do superior work in that capacity. Click here for information about the Mental Health Assistant position. An employee who is invited to be a teacher-trainee works 9-5, weekdays at JRC's school building in Canton. The teacher-trainee takes one or two classes in education per semester at a college of his or her choice and JRC will adjust the employee's schedule to accommodate these classes. JRC pays for all college course work and arranges for the employee to receive waiver from the Massachusetts Department of Education. When the waiver is obtained, the employee's salary is increased to $30,000 and he/she is given a 10 week annual paid vacation. A teacher-trainee with a waiver receives $1000 salary increase each year. When a waivered teacher-trainee receives full teacher certification his/her salary increases by an additional $5,000.

The teacher-trainee position has the following additional attractive features:

  • Attractive classrooms with no more than 10 students, with 2 or more aides and with other assistance. JRC operates beautifully furnished and fully-equipped, state-of-the-art classrooms. Click here to view examples of the classrooms and the school environment. Typically the teacher is responsible for a classroom of no more than 10 students and has two classroom aides to assist him or her. In addition, each student has a case manager who is responsible for the student's overall progress, and who acts under the overall direction of a clinician who is assigned to each student. Additionally, a special education supervisor and precision teaching specialist are available to assist the teacher.

  • State-of-the-art behavior modification systems and the latest systems in behaviorally-based educational technology are employed to motivate the students and to teach new skills. The procedures used include programmed instruction, precision teaching and networked and computerized self-instruction. The home environment is designed to fully support what goes on at school and students are supervised and motivated to do homework each weekday evening, using the same behavioral systems that are employed in the classroom. An average of one computer is provided for each student who is capable of using one, counting the student computers that are in the residences as well as in the classrooms. Unique JRC designed software in reading, math and other subjects ensures that all skills are learned quickly and to a fluent level before the student is allowed to advance.

  • Job satisfaction. As a result of all these procedures, students who refused to attend school, or who failed consistently in school prior to coming to JRC, find themselves learning rapidly and fluently for the first time in their lives. This provides a major source of job satisfaction for the teachers. In addition, JRC's powerful reward and other behavioral treatment systems quickly teach the student to act cooperatively with, and respectfully toward, his or her teachers. As a result, teachers at JRC don't suffer some of the stress and frustration that may often be experienced in public school environments.
