Students are learning to make use of the local
community for recreation, shopping, laundry and other purposes.
Students who live in
apartment complexes make use of the laundry and recreational facilities
offered there. Many students like to swim or play tennis and basketball.
Most of our students
participate in community outings to stores, movie theatres and
restaurants. Some also enjoy special outings to events such as the Harlem
Globetrotters and the Monster Jam concert.
Students in our
transitional program are employed in local businesses such as Chili’s, Friendly’s Ice Cream Shoppe, Wendy’s, Stop and Shop, Jiffy Lube, Manhattan
Bagel, Mulberry Day Care Center, and a barber shop. One student volunteers
at the Brockton Animal Shelter. Currently there are a number of students
who are looking for employment in the community. During the employment
application process they put skills learned in the classroom to practical
use.
Some students attend
classes at Blue Hills Vocational High School, where they take courses such
as Woodworking, Small Engine Repair, Graphic Communications, Culinary
Arts, Auto Repair, Cosmetology, Drawing and GED classes.
One student has
taken the GED class at Massasoit Community College and another is
enrolling there in an MCAS Prep course.
