The Judge Rotenberg Center relies on video surveillance to help insure that its staff members are carrying out their duties consistently and properly. By monitoring staff-student interactions in the JRC's school, residential homes, transitional apartments and vehicles, JRC can ensure consistent, constructive staff reactions to the students' behaviors.

JRC has created an online digital video recording system, using March Network's Digital Video Recorders (DVRs). Based on a series of hard disks, the March Network DVRs are providing JRC with on-demand video recording and recall, remotely accessible by authorized users via the JRC's own network. As a result, JRC managers can see what is happening anywhere in their facility at any time. Moreover, video "monitors" can recall events from the DVRs for fast analysis, without wasting time fast-fowarding through videotapes.

Using this system, a special team of Quality Control Monitors is assigned to watch what goes on in each of JRC's residences in real time throughout the evening and overnight. As soon as such a Monitor spots any action by staff members that needs correction, the monitor places a telephone call to the residence and brings the matter to the attention of the staff member in question.

A similar system of digital video recording is used to monitor and record what goes on in JRC's classrooms and during transportation on the school buses and vans.
