With exceptions, the lower the BMI (within the healthy srange), the better.

Blood Pressure

< 120/80 mmHg

Dr. Zarren: measure w. right and left arms, w.  properly sized cuff.

Blood glucose (sugar)

<100 mg/dL

Measure after fasting. Dr. Zarren suggests goal of <110mg/dL.

Total Cholesterol

<150mg/dL*

35% of heart attacks occur with tot. cholesterol between 150-200

HDL Cholesterol**

[none]**

[see ** note below]

LDL Cholesterol

<80 mg/d*

This is the “bad” cholesterol. Measure it after fasting.

Triglycerides

< 150 mg/dL

Measure after fasting.

* Dr. Esselstyn, who directs the longest and most successful heart disease reversal study, says that persons who regularly keep total cholesterol below 150, and LDL cholesterol below 80, through a plant-based diet, appear to be protected from developing the disease or having any progression of the disease, and may achieve selective reversal of disease. He also says that all Americans who have been eating the standard American diet for any length of time, including children, have some degree of heart disease.

**This is the “good” cholesterol. If total cholesterol is low, HDL will also be low because it is a component of the total. Dr. Esselstyn says you don’t need to focus on HDL. Dr. Zarren says that if total cholesterol is elevated, a desirable goal for men is HDL > 40 and for women, HDL > 50.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR HEALTH NUMBERS AND WHAT TO DO

Harvey Zarren, M.D.

Part 1. Understanding Your “Numbers”

Introduction:

During an evaluation of your health and risk factors for disease, you are given a set of “numbers.” The numbers are usually: Body Mass Index (BMI) from height and weight, blood pressure (systolic/diastolic), glucose (sugar), and lipid (fat particle) numbers such as Total Cholesterol (TC), HDL Cholesterol (HDL-C), LDL Cholesterol (LDL-C) and Triglycerides. The following is an explanation of the numbers.

Please remember, you are not a set of numbers! You are a whole person and your “numbers” need to be placed in a picture of your health by a competent clinician.

Body Mass Index (BMI):

Your BMI is calculated from your height and weight by using one of two formulas:

BMI = your weight (in kilograms) divided by your height (in meters) squared.

BMI = (kg.) / (m.)2

A kilogram (kg.) = 2.2 pounds (lbs.)
            A meter (m.) = 39.37 inches (in.)

or

BMI = your weight (in pounds) divided by your height (in inches) all divided by your height (in inches) multiplied by 703 (a constant number)

            BMI=(lbs.) / (in.) / (in.) X 703

Body Mass Index Table

The table below has already done the math and metric conversions. To use the table, find the appropriate height in the left-hand column. Move across the row to the given weight. The number at the top of the column is the BMI for that height and weight.
