Ingredients to Avoid

All oils, especially hydrogenated oils (partially, fully or whatever)
      Nutritionally bankrupt food that has been shown to cause arterial lesions.

Alum (as in aluminum)
      Aluminum has been associated with Alzheimer's disease.

Artificial colorings (any food dye)
      Many dyes have been shown to be carcinogens. Any chemical additive is potentially dangerous.

Calcium propionate
      Used as a preservative and has been linked to migraine headaches. Increases sodium intake.

Carrageenan (some are sensitive to this)
      Can cause stomach aches for some. Has also been linked to cancers. Best to find products not having this thickening
      agent.

Caseinogen
      See casein.

Casein
      The protein in dairy. Has been linked to the promotion of cancers.

Collagen
      An animal product.

Diglycerides and monoglycerides
      Added fats, usually in baked goods.

EDTA
      Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid. Artificial preservative. Used in chelation therapy. (See Eat to Live, p. 153 for more.)
      Also used to dissolve sulfate deposits from lead acid batteries. On a list of chemicals to be studied for possible
      reproductive hazards.

Gelatin
      An animal product prevalent in foods.

Glycerin/glycerides
      An animal product prevalent in foods.

Hydrolyzed vegetable protein
      Another word for MSG (monosodium glutamate). See below.

Hydrolyzed oat flour
      Another word for MSG (monosodium glutamate). See below.

Hydrolyzed plant protein
      Another word for MSG (monosodium glutamate). See below.

Hydrolysates
      Another word for MSG (monosodium glutamate). See below.

Hydrogenated vegetable oils
      Has been shown to cause heart disease.

Lactic acid
      A fermentation product of lactose (milk sugar). Can cause various reactions due to lactose intolerance.

Lactose
      Milk sugar. Can cause various reactions due to lactose intolerance.

Lactulose
      A food allergen. Contains milk proteins.

Lard
      An animal fat.

Monodiglycerides
      An oil.

Monoglycerides
      An oil.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
      A food additive some are sensitive to. Can cause nausea, headache, dizziness, palpitations.

Mycoprotein
      A food allergen.

Palmitate
      An oil.

Polysorbates
      An added fat.

Rennet
      An animal food. Enzyme from calves' stomachs.

Rennin
      See rennet.

Sodium caseinate
      See casein.

Sodium nitrite
      A preservative that has been strongly associated with cancers.

Sugar (any form of sugar)
      A nutritionally bankrupt food.

Sulfites
      A food allergen.

Tahini
      An oil.
