JRC offers a career path leading to a Massachusetts teacher licensure. This path is open to qualified persons who start work with us as a Mental Health Assistant and who do superior work in that capacity. (You must have some college coursework or a college degree.) An employee who is invited to become a teacher-trainee works 8am-4pm on weekdays at JRC's school building in Canton. The teacher-trainee may take one or two classes in Education per semester, at a college of his or her choice. JRC may adjust the employee's schedule to accommodate these classes. JRC pays for the classes and arranges for the employee to receive a teaching waiver from the Massachusetts Department of Education. When a waiver is obtained, the employee's salary increases to $30,000 and he/she is given 10-week annual paid vacation if in the capacity of a teacher. A teacher-trainee who has obtained the teacher's waiver receives a $1,000 salary increase each year.

The decision to submit a waiver request for an employee by JRC is based on performance and evaluation, educational background, length of employment, etc. The benefits of being a “waivered” teacher will not be granted until we receive documentation from the Massachusetts Department of Education that the waiver has been approved.

The process for obtaining a waiver for a teaching position has three components for which the staff person is responsible:

  1. Complete the Educator’s Certification Application which is available on the Massachusetts DoE web site.
  2. Apply for one of the three areas of licensure that are appropriate for teaching at JRC:

Severe Disabilities (All);
Moderate Disabilities (5-12);
Moderate Disabilities (PreK-9).

  1. Enroll in college level courses in an approved education program. (You must take 3 courses during the school year to keep your waiver.)

Once a person has achieved waiver status, assignment to a classroom as the teacher will depend on availability of a classroom, evaluation and performance, length of service, experience, etc. Retaining this position depends on successful performance in the classroom, including but not limited to treatment skills, paperwork, participation at IEP meetings, etc. More information about the teacher position is available by clicking here or by emailing our Education Department at a.hazard@judgerc.org.
